This morning I woke up to a gorgeous day. Although I really don't mind overcast days, seeing the farm in the sun is something rather special. After another nice breakfast, I went to went to work with Richard (the son of Diana- the woman who owns the farm.) up the in the fields. We were continuing a project of planting hawthorn trees along the fence. The idea is that when they grow in they will serve as a barrier for the field and thus will keep the animals in.

Just one of many that I planted today. |
After planting for about an hour and a half, we began to put green tubes over the plants, then standing them up by putting bamboo through the center of the tubes. This will ensure that the trees will be able to grow straight.
Putting the tubes over the plants. Exciting! |
From the top you can see the village of Kinghorn right across the Firth of forth over to Edinburgh. Across the way I could just make out mountains covered with sparse patches of snow. The sounds of the gulls is constant and the smell of the sea breeze is the best from atop that hill. It is really a magical view. Picture time!

Beautiful, sunny field. |
Once we had completed that project, we headed down to a lower field where they are putting in a new fence. The first day I arrived all the posts had been put in, and today Richard and I unraveled spools of barbed wire along for the fence. Let me tell you right now, that is really hard to do. It catches on everything and it's super heavy. Not to mention, I am a spaz so I kept almost rolling it over my foot. Nice.
Anyway, after running two of those spools the length of the fence, we were done for the day. This was Mike's last day here at the farm, so we just hung out in our room while he packed up. He showed the coolest way to fold a shirt ever. It is the most incredible thing I have ever seen and I will forever fold my shirts like this when traveling. Basically it makes it into this compact little ball that makes it small and easy to transport. But how it gets that way is so cool. I swear I'm going to post a video of it because I think it's that amazing.
Then Diana took Mike into town to catch a train to his next farm. I feel very lucky to have met him. It is very inspiring to meet another person who loves to travel and experience to places and things. Someone who feels the draw of adventure, and actually chases it. It was very cool to have met him and I will miss my fellow American WWOOFer.
Again I had a very lovely dinner with Diana and Richard. With pineapple for dessert! After dinner Diana very kindly gave me a few maps to look over and ideas about how to spend tomorrow, my day off. I am very excited to take an entire day to really explore the area.
So far it has been amazing to apart of this farm. I feel very at home here and everyone is very cool. See you tomorrow!
I am so happy that you are having fun, and working hard! Love, Mom
